Although Zelda's hairstyle in Skyward Sword is quite simple, her
ponytails can be quite a challenge, because most wigs do not have enough
hair for the ponytails to be thick enough. So here's a tutorial on how
to create those ponytails.
Materials:
- your wig
- blonde wefts
- a brush
- thread and needle
- sewing machine
- scissors
- green and pink fabric for the ribbons
- fabric for the ponytails (I used old socks)
- clear elastics
The first thing to do is thicken up the front parts of the wig with additional wefts. For the wefts I cut up an old blonde wig that I didn't need anymore. If you don't have an old wig lying around, you can also buy wefts from a wig shop. It doesn't matter if the wefts are not the exact shade of blonde of the wig. My wefts were a different shade of blonde, but once I sewed them in, it wasn't really noticable. If you need help with wefting there are tons of tutorials online, for example this one.
To
add even more thickness to the ponytails, I rolled up two pieces of
fabric and sewed them together, making sure that these fabric sausages
get thinner towards one end. In my case, I used old socks (Before you're
asking, yes, I washed them first :P). Many people use rolled up craft
foam for thickening up the ponytails, but I didn't really like the
stiffness of the craft foam. With the fabric, the ponytails remain
somewhat flexible, so I think that it looks more natural.
Next, insert the fabric pieces into your ponytails and secure them with
clear elastics, making sure that the thicker end of the fabric pieces is
at the top and the thinner end is at the bottom. Distribute the wig
hair evenly over the fabric rolls, so that you can't see the fabric
anymore. I used three elastics at each side to secure the ponytails.
Now, with the help of your sewing machine, you can make ribbons out of
your fabric. Once you made your ribbons, you can wrap them around the
ponytails. Once again, I used clear elastics to secure the ribbons to
the ponytails. That way it is easy to remove the ribbons and use the wig
for other cosplays as well.
